"I wanted to drop you a line outlining my experience with A1 over the last few months. My overarching view is fantastic; the job was professionally undertaken and even more surprising to me delivered within the timescale that was outlined.

At all times Kurt and the team were courteous, helpful, and were always happy to accept changes and incorporate them into the build. Also, the A1 team were always on hand to make sure everything was going to schedule, the payment plan was simple and I always knew how much was due and when, this makes the financial side easy to manage.

The rooms now look fantastic and are nearly finished, the carpets are down and the only outstanding items are the curtains, in fact this weekend we are moving upstairs.

We have ended up with a fantastic space which we are very happy with and has improved the house beyond comprehension.

As a further testament the decorating was done to such a high level that we contracted Peter to do more work for us. Graeme also built some wardrobes for us and they look great.

I would recommend A1 to any perspective customers without hesitation and would be welcome to do so at any time."

"I just wanted to say a huge ‘thank you’ for the work that has been undertaken.

Right from the outset our relations with A1 have been professional and very quick. You won our tender by a country mile; you seemed very confident of your ability to do a great job, which inspired confidence in us.

Alistair was great in looking at what was possible and talking through the different possibilities. When he shot down some of our ideas he did so in a way which we could understand and was clearly backed by a wealth of professional knowledge of e.g. what the council would allow us to do and what was structurally possible.

David Fitz headed up the team, and what a team they were. Cheerful, hardworking New Zealanders who were polite, thorough and always happy to talk through the intricacies of what they were doing. In particular Mark (the chippy) was totally self-motivated and ‘awesome’. Fitz himself was terrific, he initially handled some concerns our next door neighbours had with the steels and was very diplomatic and reassuring. Fitz was always on hand to discuss the project, to suggest ways we could improve on what we were planning - which helped enormously - and really going the extra mile to ensure we got the best outcome.

Suffice to say the rest of the team were great too. Dave the tiler, Mark the roofer, Dave the sparks, Dave and Vlad the painters... everyone put in long days were professional, courteous and good humoured (especially important when our two children were running around).

We now have a loft / bedroom which we can enjoy for years to come.

"I thought I’d take this opportunity to thank you for all your efforts throughout the project. Thanks to Nathan, Dan and the boys, the build itself went very smoothly and I was very impressed with the courtesy and good humour they showed at all times. It’s not easy having a houseful of builders but I didn’t feel having them there caused a problem at any time. They were also very helpful in explaining the various stages of the development and keeping me informed of what was happening at all times. I was also pleased that they were willing to do the extra’s that we required no matter how minor some of these items might have been.

As anticipated, the work was of a high standard and when things didn’t quite go according to plan, they always made sure that they were rectified as quickly as possible.

As you know, there were various issues that arose with one of our neighbours and it was great that you dealt with these in a calm and efficient way. It helped enormously that you were able to arrange for one of the A1 managers to visit her. Thank you also for arranging for the scaffolders to take down the scaffolding in a timely fashion – again this helped with the neighbour.

So all in all a big thank you to you and all the team at A1.

Sutton Loft Conversion and Extension, SM2

"I'd just like to say how thrilled we are with the end product. The architect did a great job of designing our extension and our builder, John Murphy, made some on-site suggestions and observations which has helped transform the downstairs of our house into a home which is perfect for us and our three small children.

We were dreading the upheaval involved with the build, particularly because of our 2 year old twins and 4 year old son. John was so mindful of our young family that he sectioned off an area of our existing kitchen so that only in the last few weeks were we affected. Even then, he erected a temporary kitchen for us which enabled us to keep hot meals on the table. Ever safety conscious, John even made a child-proof area where the guys could leave their tools which was beyond reach of our building-mad 2 year old son!

There were several bits that we weren't sure about or wanted changed over the course of the build, and John's answer was always the same...'anything is possible - if you want it, we can do it'. And he did! It has been refreshing to deal with someone who genuinely wants his client to be happy.

All in all, the building team were punctual, tidy, polite and good with the children. I'm not sorry to see the back of John and his team (it is fantastic to have our home back) but it has to be said that he helped make a potentially painful experience fairly easy for us and for that we are truly thankful.

"Since the project started, both James and I have been impressed with the support we received by the ‘behind the scenes office staff’ at A1. Rita in the pre-build team was extremely helpful in helping us achieve the plans we wanted with our local authority and when the building work begun it was very reassuring for us to have Vicky at the end of the phone – always prompt in responding to any queries we had. The majority of our loft conversion went smoothly and we were very impressed with the speed at which Paul and his team of contractors made, however, we did experience some unforeseen hurdles along the way and Vicky and the Paul were reassuringly helpful by doing their upmost to ensure solutions were sought as soon as possible.

During the build, Paul and Matty were both very friendly and punctual, considering our downstairs neighbour throughout the works too, by clearing up debris from the garden and keeping us all in the know when it is was going to be a particularly noisy day. The speed at which the first phase of the build happened was amazing – you could begin to see the new space emerging after only a few days. We were really dreading the day when the ceiling would be knocked through for the new staircase, but Paul and his team made every effort to keep the mess to a minimum. They worked late to complete this part of the job in one day, making it possible for us to continue to live in our flat during the whole build.

We are both very happy with the end result of the loft conversion and would recommend A1 to friends and family. If we had another loft conversion done on another property we wouldn’t hesitate in getting the team on board again.

Thanks guys for giving us the extra space we desperately needed without much disruption!!"

"We are delighted with the loft conversion and rear extension, it really is very impressive. The building work was of exceptional quality and all the trades were outstanding - builder, plumber, electrician, tiler, plasterer, roofer and decorator.

Phil Marshall was crucial to the success of the project with his hard work, high standards and team spirit. He had great skills at communicating with us and regularly kept us informed and asked every day if there was anything that needed discussing. He drove the project through on schedule, even working at weekends if necessary and got to grips with trouble-shooting coolly and efficiently whenever difficulties arose, especially as we had some big problems arose such as the front roof that needed replacing. Nothing was too much trouble and the snags after building work were all dealt with. A special word for Paul, Phil's assistant, who was also hard-working and incredibly easy-going. Strange to say, we miss both Phil and Paul bright and cheerful at 8am every day, almost like having regular guests in the house and it was a great pleasure having them here.

Without doubt, having Phil was one of our best decisions in the entire project. He was highly recommended by a previous A1 client whom we visited, Amanda Benbow in Putney and he lived up to expectations as a builder, project manager, and also his additional joinery work was first-class - he built us a beautiful fitted wardrobe with draws in the loft bedroom, as well as extra shelves in a sliding track wardrobe under the eaves of the loft, plus extra shelf units in the kitchen.

The support from the A1 office in Grimsby was outstanding and, it must be said, an unexpected bonus. Vicky England was in regular contact by email or phone to find out how things were going and quickly sorted out any requests and problems, even after the building work was finished. It was very reassuring to know she was always available.

It was also good to have the support of Richard Grace (Site Manager)."

"We wanted to say a big thank you to A1 for doing such a great loft conversion. We have moved up there now and it's such a beautiful, calm space, it's our little haven. The initial consultation was carried out by Kieran Cox who was extremely professional and efficient. The work was led by Graeme Lee who was a fantastic worker. He instilled us with confidence right from the start. He listened to us, advised us and suggested many excellent ideas that made our loft just that little bit better. I had no problem leaving keys with him or Pete his wonderful sidekick! Both were very patient and understanding with our three young children who wanted to see every development! They even bought our son a builders kit for his second birthday! Just so thoughtful.

The whole loft bedroom and en-suite only took 8 weeks from start to finish with minimal disruption to family life. All the tradesmen were punctual, efficient and on the end of the phone if we needed them. The finish is beautiful, especially the vast window which overlooks the greenery of Molesey and attracts many gasps from nosy friends! Thanks so much for adding a lovely new dimension to our house and lives."

"Both Emma and I have been very impressed with Phil and Paul throughout the build. They are both very friendly, punctual, polite and have done an extremely good job. We are both very happy with the loft conversion, and the end result. Phil has provided a lot of information throughout the build which is both reassuring and very useful, keeping us up to date on progress, key hurdles and any potential issues that could arise. Phil has organised the other tradesmen very well and has ensured that the project has stayed on target (for everything that is within his scope).

On an additional note, Phil has coordinated when necessary with the neighbours to ensure that they are informed with key information as and when necessary. The neighbours had a few questions and Phil explained what was happening to them in a clear and polite manner to the point that any concerns they had were addressed.

The fact that we have been happy with the other tradesmen is down to Phil, from the plasterer, to the roofer, the window maker, the tiler, the decorator and the electrician. We wouldn’t have any problem recommending Phil (and Paul) to any other future clients.

We have been very impressed with all the staff at A1 from the original salesman through to all the staff supporting and managing the build. I believe that we made the right choice when getting in all the quotes and are extremely happy that we went with A1 over the competition (one are currently over the road and don’t appear to be particularly professional). I can’t stress the importance of viewing other properties before the build as this really helped us decide to go with A1, and also gave us some ideas for the actual finishing within the loft.

"I wanted to say a big thank you to A1 Lofts and all those involved in the build of our loft. The entire project from the point of sale with James, through to the final build and sign off with Richard, was brilliantly handled and we are very pleased with the build. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

The ‘Pre-Building works’ was seamlessly handled, just as we wanted. The office was very good at providing updates on the progress of the pre-build stage.

Upon commencement of the work the office, yet again, handled out project very well. They kept us up-to-date with progress and continually called to check we were happy with the work.

Our biggest praise goes to Rich and his team of builders. Firstly, Rich, our Team Leader, handled the project in a very professional way with a lot of care and attention given to keeping us up-to-date with the project. He was quick to enquire about our specific needs, respond to them, and complete to a good standard. Often he was two steps ahead of me when it came to ideas. He was always there, or on the phone, to reassure me it was all going to be fine! When we had hiccups with the projects, as you always do with a build, he was quick to address the issue and deal with it. He took the stress away from us!

Rich’s team were brilliant. Meahi, and the other guys in the team, worked long hours and relentlessly hence the build was completed within five weeks even though it was suggested it would take 6-8 weeks. They never even asked, even though I offered, for a hot drinks on a few particularly cold mornings! They were very considerate and respectful of my house and cleaned up at the end of each day.

We are very pleased with the final build. The quality of workmanship appears very good and the extra work we asked them to do was done well. There is no question that I would recommend A1 Lofts."

Teddington Loft Conversion, TW11

"I cannot begin to tell you how delighted I am with my loft conversion. The whole process – from beginning to end – was a smooth and efficient operation.

Robbie Rodziewicz and his right hand man Radic both worked incredibly hard, I so admired their discipline. They are a great team and obviously enjoy working together. Robbie was always friendly and ready to listen and in the midst of all this he manages to get everything ordered, every person booked for each stage of the job and maintains a calm approach to all things. He is a very special character.

There have been other projects going on in my street and I notice how long they seem to take, skips with no lights, mess on pavements. The work your team did was immaculate and every evening they cleared up. I was expecting something much more traumatic! My neighbours were delighted.

Bev phoned me most Fridays, once the project was underway. She has a very nice, reassuring manner. In fact your office back-up is excellent, the phone always picked up straight away, messages always conveyed.

There was a ‘blip’ over the staircase but it’s when things go wrong that you find out if you have chosen the right company or the wrong one. I phoned on the Friday night, John came over on the Monday and only three days later a new staircase was installed. Everyone admires the staircase; in such a small house that was a major concern for me. It really does look good – sort of ‘integrated’ if you know what I mean.

The decorator, Leszek, is another person I’d like to mention. He works like a master craftsman. His preparation is meticulous. He’s done a lovely job.

I love my new room, I don’t want to furnish it, the space if so gorgeous. Thank you everyone at A1!"

"I would like to give a personal recommendation to A1 Lofts for the work carried out on my 1 bedroom and bathroom loft conversion in my London terraced property.

A1 discussed with me options and potential layouts and I was given a quotation which detailed the full scope of the work to be carried out. The survey works were conducted and the detailed plans prepared in a timely manner and the constructions works started at my convenience.

The site manager and his team carried out the construction work in a professional and friendly manner. As I work away from home during the week I was not on site during the construction work. However, the site manager kept me updated at all times on the progress of the works and discussed issues with me as required. The site manager also made himself available to meet with me at the weekend to update me face to face on progress.

A1 also regularly followed up to ensure progress was on track and the works being completed to my satisfaction.

The site manager was very adaptable and flexible in making any changes to the agreed plans to meet my requirements. He also liaised with the neighbours to ensure their requirements were attended to. Most importantly the project was completed ahead of schedule. The house was left in a clean and tidy state after the construction works were completed.

I would have no hesitation in recommending A1 Lofts to you for any planned building works you intend to have carried out. I found all the members of the A1 staff I dealt with friendly and very efficient. I would also recommend Nathan Ryan as a Site Manager."

Surrey Loft Conversion, KT12

"We wanted to express our gratitude to A1 Lofts for our fantastic loft conversion.

When you plan building works like this, there is always the fear of mess, delays, ‘no shows’ and general tardiness, none of this took place for us.

Work began for us at the end of November and was quickly followed by the snow. We fully expected there to be a number of days when the builders did not work due to the weather but they arrived promptly every morning with their flasks, worked, it seemed, continuously throughout the day and then left with a friendly goodbye.

The feared breakthrough took place earlier than expected – we arrived home from work one day to find our existing stairs, landing and part of the ground floor covered in plastic sheeting, furniture covered up with dust sheets and a new set of stairs installed. Amazingly, this continued to cause the minimum disruption – they were clean and tidy (as far as you can be when building work is taking place) – hovering frequently and always removing their shoes. All in all, they caused little disturbance, something they seemed to strive for.

Rich was friendly and efficient and always good fun to have around. We received a number of calls throughout the build from Head Office to check all was going well and each time found ourselves with little to say, there being no problems or issues to speak about.

All the above may sound a little too good to be true. However, we really could not fault the service we received from A1 Lofts or our beautifully finished loft room and I will (and indeed already have) recommend A1 to anyone and everyone who is interested. Wishing you all the very best and looking forward to seeing you all again in the future for the ground floor extension!"

"I would like to say how delighted we are with our loft conversion and how pleased we are with the work done by Jamie Dowling and his team.

The loft conversion was one part of a large number of renovations we have had carried out on our property over the last 7 months. Since the loft conversion was finished, we have had a range of other tradesmen and builders work on other parts of the house and every single one of these professionals has praised the quality of the loft conversion. As well as being very satisfied with the quality of the work, we were also impressed with how courteous, considerate and professional Jamie and his team were. Jamie communicated well, keeping us up to date every step of the way. He listened carefully to our preferences and did his best to provide us with exactly the kind of loft we wanted.

Nothing was too much trouble. Jamie’ good people skills were demonstrated from the beginning when he was able to reassure a neighbour who was initially anxious about the scaffolding. Little details, such as being considerate and helpful in terms of parking, impressed neighbours who described Jamie as ‘a very nice young man’. This has meant that we have been able to retain good relations with out neighbours despite the disruption of a loft conversion.

I would not hesitate to recommend A1 Lofts to friends and colleagues, and I would definitely advise them to use Jamie and his highly competent team.

"We’ve had building work done before so we know how stressful it can be. A1 have understood that the single most stressful thing in any building project is inadequate communication between the builder and the client. The company therefore provided a service in which communication was given top priority.

Kieran gave us a quote at the outset and was extremely helpful and reassuring. The structural engineers were efficient and discreet. When the work began, Rich, the Team Leader, was faultless in his dealings with us, the clients; consistently polite, pleasant and willing to take on our smallest concern.

We received regular calls from Rosie in head office to ensure that we were happy and, sometimes, organised. Both the main builders were the epitome of discretion, respect, hard work and skill, so much so that we felt almost guilty that they didn’t accept so much as a cup of coffee.

The dreaded moment of breaking through was so tactfully done that we barely noticed it happening. Once the inevitable mess occurred, it never got to us since we could see that every effort was being made to keep it to a minimum. The resulting loft is even better than we thought it would be. The rooms are wonderfully finished and the decorators have done a beautiful job.

The finer details of a big project like this can never be entirely understood by both parties. The success is the result of total co-operation, trust and regular discussion between client and builder, alongside very hard, skillful work on the part of the entire A1 team. I would recommend A1 to anyone who needs more space but wishes to keep the hassle factor to a minimum."

"I work away from home a great deal and so it was important that I both found the right company quickly and that they were 100% trustworthy. I was also looking for a company that could think ‘outside the box’ as I wanted something different and very striking.

The Pre-Build team were fantastic, particularly Nicky and Rita, the council wouldn’t allow the roof terrace that I wanted but A1 suggested bi-folding doors covering the width of the loft with a glass balustrade which really opens up the loft space and gives me a beautiful and unrestricted view of the River Thames.

The completed project is an amazing home entertainment room with built-in stereo system and home cinema. The team leader, Rich, was fantastic in helping to make my vision a reality and Rosie in the Build office was great – making sure everything ran smoothly and keeping me informed every step of the way.

I was away for the whole build, only returning during the plastering stage, and I am just ecstatic with the results. All of my friends and family think it’s amazing and can’t believe how well its turned out.

“A1 were recommended to us through a friend of a friend and although not the cheapest they spent the time talking us through everything and listening to what we actually wanted to achieve. We paid our deposit and then had to put everything on hold during the ‘credit crunch’ as both our businesses went through consolidation processes. A1 were fantastic throughout and very patient with us!,

Then our neighbours decided to object and the start date was put on hold whilst the dispute was resolved. Throughout, Melissa and Marilyn at A1 were very patient and sent out several extra letters reassuring our neighbours. Once the survey had been carried out and the party wall award was granted, A1 wasted no time in sending our project manager, Gene, to see us. Gene is a gentle giant and is so knowledgeable that there wasn’t even one aspect of detail that he couldn’t advise us on. Gene’s team came promptly every morning and worked hard throughout the day. At the end of every day, all the dust sheets were collected and the whole area hoovered. We couldn’t have asked for our place to be treated with more respect.

We really can’t remember life without the conversion - we managed to get a guest bedroom, shower room and study out of it and we absolutely love it! Already in the last two months, five guests have been to stay – and have wanted to come back!

One thing that other workmen commented on was the quality of the workmanship, the solid hardwood construction and the attention to detail. I must say I cannot recommend them highly enough!”

He went to huge pains to minimise the disruption caused by the building work; some visitors thought the work hadn’t started yet! Having Gene and Misha working in our house has been so painless, and the pace of the work has been so rapid, that it has been as positively relaxing and exciting process seeing our extension and roof terrace appear.

I wasn’t looking forward to this building work but it has turned out to be an entirely enjoyable experience and the finished roof terrace and dormer are beautiful. I feel lucky to have been able to work with such an effective team and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending A1 to anybody considering a similar extension.”

Throughout the entire project we have found A1 to be nothing less than professional, helpful and understanding and were consistently impressed in the speed in which the extension was actually built (well within the time schedule allowed). From Nick, the architect who spent hours poring over plans and drawings to give us just the design we wanted (it wasn’t easy, and for a while we thought our idea wasn’t going to be possible!), through to the final coat of paint by the decorator and Stuart who returned twice to make sure that the finish was perfect…The real stars though were Nathan and his team; they are a real credit to A1. They were professional, courteous, and hard-working and the standard of their work was excellent. The whole process has gone remarkably smoothly and the level/standard of work has been excellent. When we decided to convert the loft we had prepared ourselves for at least two months of disruption and imagined we would face a number of problems. However, as promised, Jimmy and the team kept to their time scale and completed the building works in just under 4 weeks which was remarkable! He was utterly reliable, very friendly and totally professional in all his dealings. He also had good ideas to contribute to the build – his creativity added a lot to the project for us. Although Philip always said that it would take about 4 weeks, we found it hard to believe. This was partly due to our previous experience of builders and partly because we’d not seen other lofts done in that sort of time.
