“A1 were recommended to us through a friend of a friend and although not the cheapest they spent the time talking us through everything and listening to what we actually wanted to achieve. We paid our deposit and then had to put everything on hold during the ‘credit crunch’ as both our businesses went through consolidation processes. A1 were fantastic throughout and very patient with us!

Then our neighbours decided to object and the start date was put on hold whilst the dispute was resolved. Throughout, Melissa and Marilyn at A1 were very patient and sent out several extra letters reassuring our neighbours. Once the survey had been carried out and the party wall award was granted, A1 wasted no time in sending our project manager, Gene, to see us. Gene is a gentle giant and is so knowledgeable that there wasn’t even one aspect of detail that he couldn’t advise us on. Gene’s team came promptly every morning and worked hard throughout the day. At the end of every day, all the dust sheets were collected and the whole area hoovered. We couldn’t have asked for our place to be treated with more respect.

We really can’t remember life without the conversion - we managed to get a guest bedroom, shower room and study out of it and we absolutely love it! Already in the last two months, five guests have been to stay – and have wanted to come back!

One thing that other workmen commented on was the quality of the workmanship, the solid hardwood construction and the attention to detail. I must say I cannot recommend them highly enough!”

They have been completely reliable and their work is very high quality. Tom has kept us informed at every stage of what has been an extensive job – virtually a re-build of the top of our house. Having to have the ceilings lowered to give us the height necessary in the loft was quite an experience, particularly since it was during the coldest winter for 30 years, but the end result has made it all worth it.

Tom’s organisation of the work and his day to day control of the build has been really impressive and we can’t praise him and his team enough.

We have also been really impressed by Marek’s plastering – the curve on the ceiling under the new stairs is a work of art.

All in all, we’ve been really happy with the service provided by A1 overall and Tom and his team in particular and would have no hesitation in recommending A1 and Tom and his team to anyone who wants a loft conversion.”

“I just wanted to let you know what a fantastic job your team has done on our loft. It began perfectly. Your quote was very competitive and I liked the fact that A1 is a one-stop-shop; it all felt very easy and unstressful. Alistair's designs took into account exactly what we wanted, and unlike some other companies we had quote for us, he did not try to persuade us that 'it might be better if...'. The co-ordination was excellent. All the pre-build stuff was smooth and very well-organised and Rita kept me informed of progress.

David and Simmo were absolutely amazing - that is literally the only word for it. They worked like Trojans from the moment they arrived in the morning (on the dot of 7.30 every day) to the moment they left. They barely even seemed to take time to breathe! They were incredibly polite and totally unobtrusive; I hardly noticed they were there.

Rachel was a really fantastic contact to have; she was friendly, helpful and obviously brilliant at organisation as everything happened when it was supposed to with no fuss at all.

The whole build took less than 3 weeks from scaffolding going up to an almost flawless builders' finish and I'm the envy of all my friends. I've been raving non-stop since it was finished - it looks fabulous!”

Our fitter, Luke, and his team and all the tradesmen concerned have worked extremely hard on the project, and were very prompt in arriving every morning. Luke was extremely profession and well organised in his approach to the job, and was always very helpful and courteous as well as patient, nothing was ever too much trouble.

Rich, as the project manager, was always contactable anytime of the day, evening or weekend and always responded to any calls or messages and got things sorted in a timely manner. They were here every day without fail, were very considerate of the fact that out daughter Emily needed to sleep during the days and were clean and tidy.

When we bought this house it needed a huge amount of work to convert it into a family home and the many bad experiences I have had with employing builders, plumbers and other tradesmen has meant that Carol and I ended up doing much of the work ourselves…

Our experiences with A1 have been entirely and refreshingly different. Gene, the site supervisor, always turned up exactly when he said that he would (often to the nearest minute!), he was methodical, a very careful planner, with high aesthetic standards and a meticulous attention to detail. He went to huge pains to minimise the disruption caused by the building work; some visitors thought the work hadn’t started yet! Having Gene and Misha working in our house has been so painless, and the pace of the work has been so rapid, that it has been as positively relaxing and exciting process seeing our extension and roof terrace appear.

I wasn’t looking forward to this building work but it has turned out to be an entirely enjoyable experience and the finished roof terrace and dormer are beautiful. I feel lucky to have been able to work with such an effective team and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending A1 to anybody considering a similar extension.”

The weekly calls to check that everything was OK were a complete waste of your time! Gene was easily the best builder I have ever met - not just in terms of his workmanship but also his personality, what a lovely man. The loft extension was done quickly, quietly and with minimum hassle - Gene and his team personified effectiveness and efficiency. "A1 looked after everything and the whole experience has been excellent from start to finish. From Nick, the architect who spent hours poring over plans and drawings to give us just the design we wanted (it wasn’t easy, and for a while we thought our idea wasn’t going to be possible!), through to the final coat of paint by the decorator and Stuart who returned twice to make sure that the finish was perfect…The real stars though were Nathan and his team; they are a real credit to A1. They were professional, courteous, and hard-working and the standard of their work was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble and Nathan went out of his way to ensure that the process was as hassle free for us as possible, and that we ended up with the loft we really wanted. A lot of companies say that they put the customer first; I can vouch for the fact that A1 really mean it."
