What are the different types of loft conversion?
There are a number of types of loft conversion. Which type you have for your home will be dependent on a number of factors such as planning permission, house type, conservation areas, roof height and available space. The main types of loft conversion are below, it is important to consider that these can then be adapted and made bespoke to suit your home:

Can all lofts be converted?
No. It is not practical to convert some lofts. We offer a FREE, no obligation consultation and will advise on all the options available to you. Simply call us on 0800 0192 678.
Are A1 experienced loft conversion specialists?
Yes. We offer over ten years of experience in the design and project management of building loft conversions. We have successfully completed over 1,200 loft conversions and only use professional tradesmen. We also offer a wealth of experience with regard to obtaining planning approval and we project manage the entire process from design to completion. Is the quality of work guaranteed?
All of our work is guaranteed. Your build will also be signed off by independent building regulators. We hold membership with the Federation of Builders (FMB) and an FMB insurance-backed guarantee may be purchased at the time of contract for a small fee and for total peace of mind.
Do I need building plans for my loft conversion?
Yes. If your conversion is for habitable accommodation it needs to be planned professionally to ensure that it conforms to building regulations. We offer the services of exceptionally skilled architects who will produce your plans to the highest standards and specifications, which will result in your loft conversion meeting with current legislation.
Can I view completed loft conversions?
Yes. We will provide you with an extensive list of past clients and you are welcome to select the properties you wish to view. We will then arrange an appointment for you and you are free to meet with our past client, unescorted to discuss the A1 experience with them and view their completed loft conversion. Our recommendation rate is such that we have completed up 12 loft conversions on the same street!

Do I need planning permission for my loft conversion?
Planning permission is generally required if you have a flat or live in a conservation area. If this does not apply to you then we can obtain a ‘Certificate of Lawfulness’ (COL) from your local council. We will advise you of this during your consultation. However, if you would like to look into this beforehand there is a government supplied document on the following link.
How much will my loft conversion cost?
Each property and loft conversion differs and you will be provided with a free quotation which covers all the work required for your project. Our quotations are all-inclusive and once you have agreed we guarantee that there are no extra charges unless you request additional work or existing services are inadequate or unsafe. Do A1 provide bathroom suites or do I have to buy them separately?
We are able to supply bathrooms through our partners or you may wish to purchase your own bathroom suite. We are able to obtain discounts for you at a number of our preferred suppliers. We can also supply kitchens, sound systems and all electrical wiring solutions. Your surveyor will advise you on this during your consultation.
How do I co-ordinate the delivery of the bathroom suite with my builders?
You don’t need to. Our support teams will work with you to co-ordinate the delivery and installation of your suite. All you need to do is decide on your suite in good time for it to be delivered on time, we will co-ordinate everything else.
Will you arrange for the installation of plumbing and electrics?
Yes. Your quote includes the extension of the existing central heating system into the new loft area unless you opt for a ‘first fix’ package. If you require a replacement boiler, ‘Megaflow’, new tanks, pumps etc. to be installed, we will arrange for a separate quote for you, which will be carried out by a Gas Safe registered heating engineer. We can arrange and co-ordinate all of these installations for you and will discuss it in more detail at your consultation.
How quickly can work commence?
Work will normally commence within one month of permissions being obtained from your local council. Planning permission usually takes 8 weeks to obtain. If planning permission is not required you will be able to extend your property without applying for planning permission under a Certificate of Lawfulness (COL). We will work with you to get your project started as soon as possible.
How long is the build process?
From the first day your build team are on site, your build will take from 4 to 8 weeks depending on the size of the job and any extreme weather conditions. Your build team will only start your job when they can be with you from start to finish. Therefore, they will be dedicated solely to your project and will not leave until the build is complete.
What is a Party Wall Agreement and do I need one?
A party wall is an adjoining wall between two properties. A party wall agreement is an agreement between you and your neighbour(s), which protects both parties when work is being carried out on a party wall. You only require a party wall agreement if you live in a semi-detached or terraced property and share an adjoining wall with another property. We will discuss this with you during your consultation.
Do A1 undertake all sizes and types of loft conversions?
